2N689

Additional information

2N689 (Stud Version) — Part of the 2N68x–2N69x High-Reliability SCR Family

The 2N689 is a high-reliability silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) built in a durable TO-48 / TO-208AA stud-mount metal package, ideal for power control and switching in demanding aerospace, defense, and industrial environments. It belongs to the 2N68x–2N69x family of reverse-blocking SCRs (2N681–2N692), offering a wide selection of voltage ratings and proven dependability across high-reliability applications.

The 2N689 features a repetitive peak off-state voltage (V_DRM / V_RRM) of approximately 1000 V, an RMS on-state current of 25 A, and a non-repetitive surge current capability up to 150 A. Available as standard, JAN, or JANTX-qualified per MIL-PRF-19500/108, it ensures consistent, mission-critical performance under extreme electrical and thermal conditions.

How It Works

When a gate trigger signal is applied, the SCR conducts current from anode to cathode and remains on until the current falls below the holding current level — enabling efficient, controlled rectification and power switching.

Pin Configuration

  • Anode – threaded stud (mount)

  • Cathode – main terminal lead

  • Gate – control input lead

Applications

  • Military and aerospace power systems

  • Industrial motor drives and automation controls

  • Power conversion and rectification systems

  • Pulse discharge and capacitor energy banks

  • High-reliability defense-grade power supplies

Pros & Cons

Pros: High voltage capability, rugged stud design, excellent surge performance, JAN-qualified reliability.
Cons: Moderate gate trigger current requirement; slower switching speed than MOSFETs/IGBTs.
