2N688

Additional information

2N688 (Stud Version) — Part of the 2N68x–2N69x High-Reliability SCR Family

The 2N688 is a high-reliability silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) packaged in a rugged TO-48 / TO-208AA stud-mount metal case, designed for reliable power switching and control in severe industrial, aerospace, and defense applications. As part of the 2N68x–2N69x family of reverse-blocking SCRs (2N681–2N692), it provides dependable performance, long service life, and stable operation under extreme environmental and electrical conditions.

The 2N688 offers a repetitive peak off-state voltage (V_DRM / V_RRM) of approximately 900 V, an RMS on-state current of 25 A, and a non-repetitive surge current up to 150 A. It is available in standard, JAN, or JANTX-qualified versions per MIL-PRF-19500/108, ensuring consistent quality and reliability for mission-critical systems.

How It Works

Applying a positive gate signal triggers conduction between the anode and cathode. Once conducting, the SCR remains on until the current drops below the holding threshold, making it ideal for controlled rectification and power switching applications.

Pin Configuration

  • Anode – threaded stud (mount)

  • Cathode – main terminal lead

  • Gate – control input lead

Applications

  • Military and aerospace power control systems

  • Industrial motor drives and automation equipment

  • Power converters and rectifiers

  • Pulse discharge and capacitor banks

  • High-reliability defense power supplies

Pros & Cons

Pros: Excellent surge capability, high voltage tolerance, JAN-qualified reliability, rugged stud design.
Cons: Moderate gate current requirement; slower response than MOSFETs/IGBTs.
